utopia in vancouver

Hi all!

recently, while waiting at the bottom of seymour mountain for a friend who was stuck in traffic at surrey, we came up with a revolutionary idea of building an absolutely separate bike path, connecting the greater vancouver together and enabling its riders to commute all year round without using cars and public transportation.

turned out that the idea is not exactly revolutionary - there is a project proposal filed in Toronto, called Utopia.

so the question to everybody here - why such a project is still nonexistent in vancouver? due to my narrow-mindedness i cannot forsee the reasons not to build such a bike-highway here. not too many riders live in vancouver? untrue! they just stay home/drive cars because of the rain.

having built something similar (at least a roof covering the bike streets) will definitely return to vancouver its fully deserved status of the best city in the world, make its people happier and more independent of weather/traffic conditions, etc, etc..

please tell me why! otherwise - let's do it together!!!!

Cool find.

Elevated bike tubes (what the Utopia project has a proposal for) have been around for quite a while.

A quick google search produced: http://www.thepurehands.org/cycleways/

I am personally totally in favour of them. They are safe, keep people dry in the winter (hence reduce the excuses) and it would be easy to have great add-ons like having giant fans on either end to ensure there is a back draft in each tube. If I could have even a gentle tail wind I am sure I could commute comfortably at 50 km/hr. Vancouver would probably only a few. Probably one that runs East/West into and out of the city center and a couple that run North/South that take you to Richmond and Surrey. Of course it would be nice to have some that also visit some of the farther out places like Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Langely etc, but I can't see there EVER being the political will to accommodate cyclists in those areas.

Anyway the tree hugger has a nice summary of the Utopia project:

The CPR right of way on Arbutus would be good for that. Kurt
