I was heading home last night when the sun started to peak out from the clouds and I knew what I had to do. I had to make way to the start of the 2007 Tuesday Night World Championships (TNWC) at UBC. For those not in the know the TNWC is a local Vancouver training race. It has been going on for over 2 decades now and its a great way to pick up some intensity during the week.
Anyway I had a good race, early on an EV rider and myself stuck a 2 person break and put on something like 45 seconds on the field by the time it was all said and done. He was a strong rider as he nipped me by a tire width for the Prem and easy got me on the final sprint.
I lead both those sprints and lost both. Hrmmm... clearly I need to work on sprinting.
Also a secret of doing a break is to break with someone who has a number of teammates in the field. It is unlikely that they will do any work to drag you back in. Also one of my teammates (Go Might Riders) did a great job at the start by blocking the field (aka riding slower at the front of the pack) allowing us to first get some distance on the field.
Anyway, breakaways are cool, I highly recommend them. They are all about effort and pain, balls to the wall as they say. I only wanted to cry once when I realized we had seven laps left (fuck!). But you suck it up don't let yourself back off and before you know it, its the bell lap and you better be thinking about the final sprint!
