How to make a hexagonal wheel

So I set out to make the craziest looking chopper wheel I could imagine. I had a bunch of parts laying around and decided to try and make them work together.

Materials used:

  • Alex MX22 single walled 20" rim, 48H, black
  • Old Shimano Freewheel hub, low flange, 36H
  • 36x 184mm Wheelsmith stainless spokes,
  • 36x 14g nipples
  • 12x punk rock spikes

Since I was attempting to lace a 36H hub to a 48H rim, I needed to skip some holes in the rim.
To make it really stand out, I determined that a 3Leading/3Trailing configuration would go well with the missing holes.

I put 6 groups of 2 punk rock spikes through the wheel, spaced out every 6 holes, to section off the 'fans' of the spokes.

I then laced it up, which was exceedingly difficult.
This is due to the spoke hole offset being incorrect on half of the fans. It probably took me an hour to thread all the spokes.

Finally I was able to start tensioning it.
As it turns out, you cannot just count the number of threads being screwed into each nipple, as there are 3 different spoke lengths needed, due to the hole offset. Some were getting very hard to turn, while others remained slack.

As of right now, I've got it mostly up to tension, but its got a radial hop. Actually, its got 3 major radial hops, and 3 minor ones.

I guess this is due to using a soft single walled rim, skipping holes on 6 parts of the rim, and having 3 sets of compression forces due to the spoke fanning.

It looks cool as hell, but its not going to be very strong, and I might not be able to true the hops out.

Sorry for the lack of pictures, I've got no camera at the moment.
You'll just have to imagine it, or come over to my place and see it on the truing stand.

I will even bring out my big camera, and studio flashes on my back on my bike to your house. Just give me a time/place kinda thing!

We gotta share this brilliance with the world!

Can't believe I was at Lyle's place last night, ogling this wheel, and didn't think to take my camera out of my bag. Durrr.

Hey Lyle, Just came upon this site and saw your mug. I'm looking for a fixed gear bike or frame to get into it, hoping to talk to you about it. shoot me an email, vinistois@gmail.com let me know next time you want to have a gang war on victoria, I'll bring friends! =)
