So every morning I ride out from Maple Ridge to Vancouver (family lives out in the big bad M.R.) I am always amazed by the number of cars I pass. Its crazy. Here is a route (the Lougheed Highway) that a car should absolutely be killing me, as the speed limit the whole way is around 80 km/hr. Yet because of the traffic, here I am on bicyle holding my own, passing numerous cars depending on the section of road. Often I keep track of unique cars and at times I do not getting passed until I reach Burnaby, some 30 km away.
Anyway, I have always wanted to make a video of one of my commutes. Well, I finally got around to it a couple weeks ago and here is some footage. Compare the difference in flows of movement. Which do you think is more relaxing?
At some point something went wrong with the camera and it stopped, so all I have is from Maple Ridge to the Pitt River Bridge (and later on in Coquitlam when I got it going again). Oh well, I will have to do this experiment again. That said, I think even this little bit of footage shows that bicycles not simply "toys," but viable alternative to the automobile as a form of urban transportation.

That was a pleasure to watch and your choice of cake was great too....arffff that the camera crapped....you are indeed whacked, my good man...
If I might ask, how did you mount the camera to the bike? I've experimented with this and always get an unacceptable amount of vibration from the road.
If I might ask,Where'd you get the soundtrack for this epic saga?
Thats a perfect ride for a fixie if I ever saw one.
Okay. Let me get with it here
GZ The sound track is from the Comfort Eagle album by Cake. Here is the album cover if you go looking for it in the store:
Why do this? Just b/c I can.
midnightsimon thanks for the suggestion on doing redoing the video, this time going from Van to MR. My problem is that the heavy traffic occurs during low lights making filming a no go now. But there is still plenty of light in the afternoon so I will get on that. Plus the trip is faster so hopefully the camera will last the time.
Wow.. 76km daily! No wonder it looks like you're riding at warp speed!
I'm really curious to see what your bike looks like now.. with camera, horns, fenders, satnav etc.
Pretty seriously commutarded I'll bet =D
OKAY
I only put on one thing at a time so as not to look like a total dork.
That just leaves me with my pollution mask, water bottles, satnav, and a bazooka. Mad max look out!
i have similar grin-inducing experiences with faster-than-traffic riding in over-congested Newark Delaware. your video captures it nicely.
keep using your powers for awesome.
