More killing parts

Shimano M540s

A few weeks back, I had killed my sealed bearing Wellgo's after 1000 km. Not wanting to wait to ride, I ran out and purchased the Shimano M540s.

These pedals felt great.

The 'sprung float' feeling was perfect for me, in that they auto centre the foot. So once I had the cleat dialed, my ankles felt great. After 400km, the right pedal started clicking. I thought I was imagining things.

Was it my crank arm or bb?

I tried a few things, including silicon spray lube on the cleat/binding mating surfaces, tightening the release mechanism.. and finally, swapping on my bmx platforms. Sure enough, I have killed another right pedal. Being that they were only a couple of weeks old, I took them back to the bike doctor. They said they would open them up, and if it was a bearing defect, I would get them waranteed.

Two days later, I've got a brand new pair of pedals.

Lets hope these ones last a bit longer.

I use SPDs at work, and we kill them fairly often. I don't really like them that much, but they're just convenient when you're on and off the bike *all* the time.

On weekends though, I swap them out for old school track pedals, clips and straps and my high-tops... I find that to be a more comfortable combination.

damn... i picked up a pair of used 505s via craigslist for cheap just to see if i liked riding fixed and clipless. its been fun so far but i cant seem to get my cleat tension dialled. makes skidding that bit more exciting if youre not sure of one pedal might pop out due to the force of the skid.

i lubed and cleaned them when i got them and they are spinning pretty well but i'll have to keep an eye out.

lyle, i think i saw you at the MC3 performance ride on friday. you were on your bmx with a black helmet?

I have been keeping my SPDs around 8 'clicks' from minimum tension, or two full revolutions. This seems pretty secure, though I've almost gotten stuck in them during sketchy track stands where I've had to dab a foot.

..and yes that was me on the blue BMX with the Black helmet. =]

I figured it would be a slow ride, so I brought the little bike to amuse myself.
Plus I didn't want to lose my bike in a sea of fixies.

What did you think of the performances?

IMO, the BCClettes were alright, the Band had some pretty catchy tunes, and BRAKES.. well..

I was unimpressed with the pitbike dancing action, until the guys did that remote control crab move. That blew me away. I think the stripping may have been over the top, but they had to upstage the BCClettes somehow.

I didn't end up going to the party in the woods, instead I headed back to eastvan. Escorting a somewhat drunk girl on a very heavy cruiser.

Don't know what you guys do to your pedals, but I've been using the same pair of Time ATACs on my commuting bike since 1996. These things rock, best money I ever spent at my LBS.

i had fun on the ride... for me the feeling of riding in big group through the city is till pretty rad no matter how many times ive done it.

i always enjoy the BCClettes... plus it was hilarious to see the looks on the faces of the passerby (including those businessmen on the corner who i think were completely confused by the sight of dancing girls surrounded by piles of bikes, but not a sponsorship banner in sight).

the band were neat for a song or two... but then i started to get a bit bored. the lyrics were pretty funny though.

BRAKES had a great idea, esp since from what I heard none of them had any dance experience (i met their 'dance coach' after) and so it was pretty amateur and they were apparently completely nervous about it. but you are right... the breakdancing with bikes was super cool. the stripping... well it takes a lot of guts to do that esp in a big space like stanley park and all the girls i knew thought it was completely adorable that they were all matching.

i ended up going into the park to see the poetry. i have to admit riding a real track bike with 23c tires over some of the trails we followed was an *amusing* experience. we kicked out straight after the poetry. it was neat in a foresty/middle-of-nowhere/but so close to the city kinda-way... but i had no idea how to get home and id made it that far without crashing on my bike so leaving then seemed like a good idea.

Hmmmm.... I am thinking I need to get out on the town some more again

All work and now play makes wease a dull boy.

Good thing there is you guys to keep representing!
