Test Commute Footage

So I bought a video camera of Ebay, a very cheap one at that. The Oregon Scientific ATC-1000. The footage is decent, but definitely not great. The camera has absolutely no features, except that it shoots video. That said for $80, it was a screaming deal. Here is a quick edit of some of the footage I took yesterday on my commute. The camera was attached to my handle bars so it shakes a bit when the ground gets rough. Mucho thanks to Nasville Pussy for the background music debauchery.

Made with iMovie.

Not too shabby for a first vid - good work. You may find some good tips on mounting the camera at this site:

The videos linked to from the above page are worth a look aswell.

I just had to buy a bunch of those cameras for work and was wondering how the footy would look. You're right, it's not bad. A little "warbley" but still pleanty clear. Good enough for web videos anyway. Now get yourself a memory card upgrade for that thing and start compiling footage!

I think the 'warbling' effect is from the freqency of vibration being higher than the frame rate of the video.

Have you tried helmet mounting yet?
That would probably clear up the image, and allow you to get plate numbers if needed.

Thanks

When I save up some more money I will get a 1 gig card (50 min +). I realize video editing entails a bit of work. I am aiming to have something decent by the end of summer

As to the 'warbling' I wonder if its the effect to the compression algorithm, as it captures and encodes the video on the fly (i.e. its still using previous frame information as a form of compression so the quick vibration is lost). But now I think about it the low frame rate (15 fps) may be a better explanation... don't mess with the engineer-

eh Lyle?

Oh yeah... b/c its a wide angle the helmet mount makes it look slower than it is. I just need to figure out how to dampen out the vibrations

I actually think the crummy quality looks cool. Seriously... have fun with your new toy!

checked out http://www.digave.com that dude has some messed city footage.

Nuts!

I found digave after reading an article in Dirt Rag about Lucas Brunelle. The article read in the same manner that the videos play out - crazy.
Get any more footage? I found the streets to be a bit more nuts than usual this week - I could've used a camera.

I recently started video blogging my cycle commute to work across the city of Shanghai (The Crash Test Dummy Video Blog). I'd welcome your comments. . You can see how I've attached the camera on the "How" page. Even wearing a helmet here attracts attention so I've cable tied a mini tripod to the handlebars instead. Works pretty good! At present a sock acts as a shock absorber but I recently picked p a sheet of foam rubber from a local store and wil put that to good use shortly

Cool I checked you out... Interesting riding environment. I will check out more of our videos shortly

I've done a few cycling helmet cam videos. The cyclocross races are fairly popular. Check 'em out for some off road fun: http://www.hanskellner.com/videos/cycling.html
